How to raccoon proof your garbage

Raccoons love them some garbage. Most garbages contains a lot of food raccoons love, like fruit that is still fresh because in America we are wasteful and threw away perfectly good food. But it is annoying because they like to knock your garbage offer and the cleanup can be hell.

Thankfully there are some amazing ways to stop them from getting into your garbage at all.

So it’s very important to know they, the enemy. So let’s explore the raccoon diet and see what those rascals like to eat and why it seems to all come from your garbage can?

Raccoons are opportunistic eaters, they will eat literally anything they can get their hands on. They will happily eat anything and everything in your trash can and they won’t stop there. They love to eat frogs and insects and slugs and even small animals, birds, and eggs. They will happily tear your garden apart eating bulbs and vegetables.

Mice and other small rodents are a big attraction for raccoons. If you have mice in your house you may also have a raccoon eating them. Don’t get too excited, they are full of illnesses and will fill your attic with poop.

If you want to stop them then you’ll have to start with your property. Take in all food and leftovers, don’t leave any food outside, even dog or cat food. You will definitely need to either move your garbage cans into the garage or lock them in some way. You can stick a cinder block on top, or strap id down with bungee cords or you can buy a metal garbage can that locks. Either way, you need to cut off their food supply if you want them to leave.
